Baroka FC head coach Morgan Mammila has taken a sly dig at Orbit College’s display, saying no team wins the championship playing long balls.
Bakgaga were held to a 1-1 draw by Orbit in their opening match of the 2024/25 Motsepe Foundation Championship season in Lebowakgomo, with Mammila particularly unhappy about the opponents’ long balls, something he said his charges could’ve dealt with in a better way.

“It’s the first game of the season and I think we were not as sharp like I expected,” Mammila told the media after the game.
“We were losing the ball easily in the middle and giving away the ball cheaply and hey, I’m welcomed to NFD. Those longs balls, we had to fight for second balls. I think they [Orbit] were doing that and I think we should have done better.”
Mammila, however, warns that anyone who plays long balls like their Sunday opponents won’t finish first.
“Check the records, all the teams that have been promoted nobody was playing long balls, go and check,” he added.
“So, if you want to get promoted don’t play long balls. The team that plays long balls they won’t even be number one because of long balls. Check the records.
“Ajax [now Cape Town Spurs], they were not playing long balls, Richards Bay they were not playing long balls, Baroka were not playing long balls so, if you want to get promoted don’t play long balls.”
The Limpopo-based side currently occupy position number five while Orbit is in 10th spot, with the former next traveling to the Northern Cape to take on Upington City on Saturday, August 31.
