The prize money for this year’s MTN8 tournament has increased massively, the Premier Soccer League have announced during the launch.
Local football returns this weekend, as the 2024/25 season kicks off with the Wafa Wafa Cup when defending champions Orlando Pirates take on SuperSport United on Saturday, 3 August.
The second quarter-final takes place on Sunday when Stellenbosch FC host TS Galaxy at Danie Craven Stadium.
The MTN8 quarter-finals continue next weekend, when Sekhukhune United host Cape Town City on 10 August, before this round concludes with Mamelodi Sundowns hosting Polokwane city.
During the launch event on Wednesday, it was announced that all eight teams will receive increased prize money in 2024/25, while the winning team prize money has also gone up massively.
“I have a very special announcement to make. It is an announcement by our executive committee, as well as the chairman,” Nonhlanhla Nkosi, PSL Head of Brand Marketing, Media & Sponsorship stated.
“On behalf of the PSL chairman and the executive committee it is a great pleasure to announce that the prize money for the MTN8 winning team has been increased from R8 million to R10 million.
“The participation fee from for the clubs has also increased from R800 000 to R1 million.”
