Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine says his heroics in last season’s MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns won’t factor in when they face Stelllenbosch on Saturday.
Pirates are chasing an unprecedented third consecutive MTN8 title, while Stellenbosch are vying for their first-ever, and only second domestic cup in the club’s history.
Chaine was the hero last season in the penalty shootout, saving three penalties in their clash at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
“I think the most important thing for myself is to leave the past in the past, it was a good experience, a good game but the most important thing is what happens on the 5th of October at 18h00.
“For myself, it’s to understand, to see the game as a new experience. To focus on what we can do and what I can do for the team and not dwell much on what has happened [against Sundowns]. It was a victory last year, last year is gone.
“History you look at… at the end of your career, we must now work hard and win the game on Saturday.”
With the game being played at the same venue, Chaine further emphasised that their 10-match unbeaten start to the seven, which has seen him keep seven clean sheets, also means nothing going into another cup final.
“It’s been a very good start to the season but we won’t want to draw a lot on what has happened, we always want to get better, always want to improve as Orlando Pirates, getting better each and every game,” Chaine said.
“I think whoever is given the chance to play, just helps the club to get more clean sheets, score goals and win more games, that’s the most important thing.”
