Light At The End Of The Tunnel For Mailula?

Former Mamelodi Sundowns forward Cassius Mailula finally made his first appearance in 2024, getting a rare 11 minutes on the pitch in a 4-0 loss against Vancouver Whitecaps.

Mailula, 22, has been struggling with game-time at Toronto since arriving at he Major League Soccer club in July 2023.

Overall, he has played just over 80 minutes since making his debut in August.

A few weeks ago, Toronto head coach John Herdman stated that the level is just too high for the Bafana Bafana international, and having the likes of Federico Bernardeschi and Lorenzo Insigne makes it even more difficult for him to make the breakthrough.

Mailula was introduced in the 79th minute after the substitute of Deandre Kerr. When he came in the score line was 2-0 but later Toronto conceded another two to make it 4-0.

The former Sundowns youth development had one well-saved shot on target and made 11 touches, hoping he will have impressed his coach to get more opportunities.

Toronto are currently sitting in seventh spot in the Eastern Conference, having collected 10 points from seven games in the new season.
