Makhanya On Facing Messi

Olwethu Makhanya says it’s unbelievable that he will be playing in the same league as the global icon Lionel Messi.

Makhanya, 19, completed a three-year move to Philadelphia Union in the Major League Soccer (MLS) recently, the same league Messi’s Inter Miami competes in.

The six time Ballon D’or winner and current world champion with Argentina announced his arrival in America with a match winning free-kick and has since scored eight goals in the Leagues Cup.

Messi’s Inter Miami and Makhanya’s Philadelphia Union will now meet each other in the semi-final of the Leagues Cup, with the game kicking off at 1AM SAST on Wednesday.

Makhanya, who has always been vocal about wanting to play in top leagues outside South Africa spoke to iDiski Times writer Lethabo Kganyago in edition 114 of the newspaper, addressing his feelings about potentially facing Messi.

“Yes Messi, this is another reason this move is so unbelievable to me,” Makhanya told iDiski Times.

“Growing up we’d all speak about Messi but that one day I’d actually play in the same league as him and fight for the same title with him would be a lie, I swear. You have no idea how excited I am.”
