Bafana Bafana legend Sibisuso Zuma believes Hugo Broos is making a mistake by overlooking AGF Aarhus star Gift Links for the national team.
Links was part of Broos first squad selections but has not featured for the senior national team since September 2021 when they drew 0-0 against Zimbabwe in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
The 25-year-old has just completed his fifth season in the Danish top-flight where he featured 35 times this season, with two goals and seven assists featuring as a wing-back for 2024 Danish Cup finalists.
“It’s definitely a mistake because their standard of the game is a level higher than [the PSL], he’s been there for a very long time,” Zuma said on the Bettor Podcast.
“While I was there, I learnt a lot and I took that back and helped the national team qualify for a lot of tournaments, I’m sure he wants to do that as well.
“I’ve been following him, he works very hard, I’ve watched some of his games when I’m in Denmark, he brings quality every week – so we need someone who’s going to be there every time and gives us his all every time he’s with Bafana Bafana.”
Zuma went on to suggest that more players should follow Link’s route to Europe as it will only benefit the national team to have players at a higher level abroad.
“We need guys like him with a lot of experience of all the years he’s been there. And definitely, we need a lot of our PSL players moving… I’m not saying specifically Denmark but anywhere in Europe, it’s important for our game,” he added.
“If you look at the AFCON 96 team, most of them were in Europe and we qualified for everything.”
Last week Broos named his preliminary Bafana Bafana squad set to face Zimbabwe and Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers for June.
