Ngcobo Transfer-Listed By Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs are understood to have transfer-listed defender Njabulo Ngcobo, who still has one more year left on his contract.

The 29-year-old still has one more year to run on his contract, which will expire at the end of the 2023/24 season.

The KwaZulu-Natal-born defender featured in only 11 league matches and just seven as a starter, plus one in the MTN8 and two in the Nedbank Cup, losing his place initially to Zitha Kwinika before the resurgence of form of Siyabonga Ngezana, who shared the centre-back position with Edmilson Dove in most games of the second half of 2022/23.

But this publication has learnt Chiefs’ leadership have decided to deem him surplus to requirement, as he has failed to meet coach Arthur Zwane’s demands.

“Njabulo Ngcobo has been transfer-listed by Chiefs,” said the source.

Mapholoba, as Ngcobo is known, joined Amakhosi at the beginning of the 2021/22 campaign from Swallows after he was named the DStv Premiership Defender of the Season, helping the Soweto giants to a top-six spot in their first season back in the top flight under coach then-coach Brandon Truter.

But he already struggled to recapture that Swallows form in 2021/22, initially under Staurt Baxter before Zwane took over.

He had a fallout with the latter, when he was still interim coach after not shaking his hands following an early substitution against Golden Arrows, which infuriated then goalkeeper coach Lee Baxter and the two had to be prevented from clashing heads by other players.

Ngcobo later apologised to Zwane and the entire team for his behaviour but the signing of Given Msimango and Thatayaone Ditlhokwe has seemingly ended the spell of ‘Roadblock’ at the club with Siyabonga Ngezana, Dove Edmilson and Zitha Kwinika also options in defence.

Austin Dube is also expected to depart this season after limited game time under Zwane, while Amakhosi are grooming Aden McCarthy and Thabo Mokoena for the first-team.
