Van Duivenbooden Reacts To Surprise Bafana Call-Up

Vitesse striker Simon van Duivenbooden says it’s a dream for him and his family to earn a call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad.

The 22-year-old was listed in the preliminary squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with South Africa set to host Uganda at Orlando Stadium before an away trip against South Sudan.

This website reported last month that the Dutch-born striker, born to a South African father received his necessary paperwork to be eligible to represent Bafana Bafana, in what was a long protracted saga which saw him miss out on representing the U23 national team.

However, during the off-season, the former PSV Eindhoven striker completed the process in the Western Cape before an impressive pre-season with the Dutch club.

“Yes, [I’m excited] this means a lot to me and my family, as a little boy you dream of this and now it really happens and that is beautiful,” he tells iDiski Times.

“I thought it was a shame that I could not be with the U23s but never managed to my passport and now we are here [with the senior squad].”

The towering striker started the first game of the season in the Eerste Divisie and will aim to impress in their upcoming two games against Excelsior and FC Eindhoven.
