Motsepe Opens Up On Sundowns Transfer Plans

Mamelodi Sundowns Chairman Thlopie Motsepe says they will only go into the market for the right type of player that can complement the current squad to take the club to the next level.

Sundowns have been granted an exceptional window by FIFA to make signings before the 2025 Club World Cup in the United States of America in June.

However, it’s unlikely major changes will take place within the squad, who are currently preparing for the CAF Champions League final after winning an eighth consecutive league title.

With Sundowns aiming for stability in the global event where they are grouped with Fluminense (Brazil), Ulsan (South Korea) and Borussia Dortmund (Germany), new arrivals will likely only be after they return from the USA.

“We’re at that stage now where the season is drawing to a close, it will be a little bit difficult because of course, our pre-season will be cut a bit short, but it will be important to find opportunities to bring in a few players and give the coach a pre-season he didn’t have,” Motsepe said at the Carling Black Label partnership event on Tuesday afternoon.

“If you look back at this year, the coach came at a time where he didn’t have a lot of time to pick his players or get to establish his style of football in the club, an opportunity that most coaches get when they come with a pre-season behind them.

“So, taking that into consideration, to see we’re in the final of the CAF Champions League, with the players he found there, is an incredible achievement and testament to the players, their character, and to him and the technical team – a lot of credit should be given.

“Of course, we will go into the market and look for the type of players that can complement, what we’re trying to achieve, we have a wonderful Sporting Director in Flemming Berg, as well his assistant Ryan Hunt and our board.

“We will definitely try our best to make sure the Sundowns you see next year – is one that is only building on better things to come.”

Sundowns are travelling to Cairo to face Pyramids in the second leg African Champions League final which takes place on Sunday evening at 30 June Stadium.
