Stellenbosch FC defender Olwethu Makhany has completed a move to Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union.
Makhanya, 19, follows the likes of Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Njabulo Blom, while Mamelodi Sundowns are also “in talks” with a MLS club believed to be Toronto over Cassius Mailula.
Just minutes after Makhanya bid farewell to Stellenbosch, his new club are unveiled him as new signing on a deal until 2025, with an option until 2027.
“Philadelphia Union announced today that they have signed defender Olwethu Makhanya from Stellenbosch FC to a two-and-a-half-year contract. With this acquisition, Makhanya will be the Union’s first player under the league’s U-22 initiative,” the club stated.
Makhanya, who was named Nedbank Cup Young Player of the Tournament, had strongly been linked with a move to Mamelodi Sundowns but opted for a move overseas, as he mentioned in an exclusive interview with iDiski Times a couple of weeks ago.
A recent change of agency has helped him to secure his dream move, as reported in the iDiski Times newspaper, edition 111. The 19-year-old recently signed with renowned agent Rob Moore of Centre Circle, who also took Benni McCarthy to Manchester United last season.
“I would like to thank Stellenbosch FC for the opportunity they gave me and the great confidence that was shown in me,” he stated.
“It is with mixed emotions that I bid farewell to the team. I have enjoyed working with you all and have made many fond memories during my time here.
“An incredible team that will forever remain in my heart, where everyone received me as a family member, showed me love, helped me grow as a player and especially as a person.
“I’m very lucky to have been part of not just a great team but great human beings with huge hearts.
“It is with great pride that I have accepted a new challenge and as I leave the club . I would like to wish the team and everyone all the best in the next seasons.
“With much love and gratitude.”
