Stellenbosch FC winger Antonio Van Wyk is set to sign with Austrian club SV Ried.
Van Wyk, 22, becomes the third big transfer exit in as many weeks for Steve Barker’s team, following the departures of Deano Van Rooyen and Iqraam Rayners, to Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, respectively.
It will be Van Wyk’s first opportunity at a club abroad, as he is set to join the Austrian side, as first reported by SABC Sport.
Barker also confirmed the move on Monday, telling the media, “Antonio Van Wyk is now going toAustria. I believe it will be probably finalised soon, if not already finalised.”
He will also fortunately not be completely heading into unchartered territory, as he will join his former coach, Moritz Kossmann, at Ried. Kossmann and Van Wyk worked closely together from 2017 to 2021 at the Ubuntu Academy.
Van Wyk joined Stellenbosch that year, first making an impression in the DStv Diski Challenge, before becoming a first-team regular, and featured in 80 games in all competitions for the Carling Knockout champions.
Van Wyk, who had also attracted interest from ES Tunis and USM Alger, and was also on the list of potential Kaizer Chiefs targets, has also represented his country at the COSAFA Cup, winning four caps and scoring once.
In 2023, Kossmann, who also writes The Drawing Board column for the iDiski Times newspaper, became Cape Town City’s Diski Challenge coach, before joining Maximilian Senft’s technical team at Ried earlier this year.
Now, they will get to work together again at Ried, who are currently sitting atop of the Austrian second division.
