Baxter Targets Nedbank Cup Trophy

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Stuart Baxter has targeted the Nedbank Cup to finally end the club’s trophy draught.

Amakhosi, who are the record champions of the Nedbank Cup, having won it thirteen times, have failed to take home any trophies since the end of Englishman’s first stint in 2015.

Chiefs were close to winning the same competition in 2019, but TS Galaxy beat them 1-0 in the final after they were awarded a stoppage time penalty that was converted by Zakhele Lepasa.

However, Baxter, who enjoyed a fruitful first stint at Naturena, winning two league titles, the Nedbank Cup and one MTN 8 tournament, is aiming for a strong cup run to reduce the pressure at the club.

“I think we have got to look at the Nedbank Cup as being a target,” Baxter told reporters.

“We’ve got to look at the Nedbank Cup as we’re in it and we have a chance in it.

“And the other thing is because independent of how it goes, it’s going to be a tough ask to now exert that pressure that we were talking about before.”

The Glamour Boys will host TS Galaxy in the Nedbank Cup encounter at the FNB Stadium on Saturday, 12 February at 18:00.
