Eric Tinkler was very disappointed after Cape Town City could only manage a goalless draw in their DStv Premiership match against Chippa Unite in Gqeberha on Wednesday.
City missed an opportunity to move into second position on the table, as Mduduzi Mdantsane missed a penalty, and failed to penetrate Chippa’s defence on other occasions.
Tinkler said it was disappointing to draw the game, but said his team failed to create enough opportunities, and when they did get a chance from the penalty spot, they failed to take it.
“To be brutally honest, I’m actually disappointed with the draw,” Tinkler said after the game.
“I think we knew obviously coming here that it was going to be a tough match because of the way they play. very defensive, low block nine players behind the ball just leaving Eva Nga. And in the first half, we looked to break them down and created one or two little half-chances.
“And we got caught twice actually on the break from them that Hugo Marques had to make two good saves. But I think the rest of the time we were literally camping in there half.
“At halftime, we looked to make one or two adjustments in terms of our strategy. And the second half, Hugo didn’t have to make a save. He had to come out and sweep once or twice, but literally, we were constantly in their half and we just couldn’t play that final pass, make that right decision, the weight of our pass wasn’t great.
“We didn’t get into the spaces that we could possibly turn and have a shot at goal. The little chances we did create, we didn’t get on the end of it. I remember Mayo having an opportunity to get on the end of a cross, and then ja, it became difficult.
“But then the last eight minutes, we got a bit of a reward from all our hard work. A pressing strategy was exceptional, they lost the ball inside the box. We ended up winning a penalty from that pressure.
“And then you got to put it in the net and we didn’t, we didn’t score that one.
“And then I can’t fault the guys for effort, you could see the desire was there to go and collect the three points.
“They really, really put in the effort, it’s just the quality, we lacked the quality in that final third. You know so ja, we just gonna have to regroup and move on but ja, everybody disappointed with the draw.”
