After Banyana Banyana lifted their first ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title, here is how much South Africa have earned in prize money.
Revealed: How Much Prize Money Banyana Earned
Banyana beat Morocco 2-1 at their own home ground at the Prince Moulay Stadium in Rabat, Morocco thanks to two goals by Hildah Magaia in the second half.
It was South Africa’s first ever triumph in WAFCON history in their sixth final and our ladies will receive a lofty prize money windfall.
The Confederation of African football will pay the South African Football Association R8.4 million in prize money, while second-placed Morocco will receive R5 million.
In addition, SAFA promised to pay R9.2 million in bonuses to the squad, which equals R400 000 per player if we divide the overall amount by 23 players.
“We are going to pay R9,2 million in bonuses for this team on the basis that they win the Awcon. So if they win Awcon we will pay R9,2m. If you look at the other costs, in other words our total investment in this team for specifically this Awcon, it is R10 million,” SAFA president Dr Danny Jordaan said ahead of the tournament.
“This is our commitment and confidence in Banyana Banyana. This R10 million is the highest amount ever paid to any national team, men and women. So you have broken the barriers.
“You will have the highest amount ever paid to any national team in the history of South African football.
“We want you to continue to break barriers and transform South African football.”
CAF bonus money: R8.4 million ($500,000)
