FIFA Confirm African Quali Path For 2024 CWC

FIFA have confirmed the African qualification path for the extended 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, with Mamelodi Sundowns currently on track to take part in the tournament.

FIFA recently confirmed the allocation per confederation, with four teams from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) set to take part.

CAF teams currently have two paths to qualify for the tournament, either via the champions pathway, where Al Ahly and Wydad Athletic Club have both already booked their spots after winning the 2020/21 and 2021/22 CAF Champions League titles, respectively.

The 2023/24 CAF Champions League winners will also qualify for the tournament unless it’s either of the above-mentioned teams. In this case, similar to last season when Al Ahly were crowned champions, the highest-ranked team or teams via the ranking pathway will book their tickets.

Currently, Sundowns are the third highest-ranked team in the ranking pathway behind Al Ahly and Wydad, and would qualify for the tournament even in case they won’t win the CAFCL – unless they’re being overtaken in the ranking.

Current ranking log, as per FIFA:

  1. Al Ahly (Egypt) – 110 points [Q]
  2. Wydad AC (Morocco) – 102 points [Q]
  3. Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa) – 81 points [currently qualified per ranking]
  4. ES Tunis (Tunisia) – 75 points
  5. CR Belouizdad (Algeria) – 59 points
  6. Petro de Luanda (Angola) – 49 points
  7. Simba (Tanzania) – 45 points
  8. Raja CA (Morocco) – 45 points
  9. Al Hilal Omdurman (Sudan) – 33 points
  10. Horoya (Guinea) – 29 points
  11. Kaizer Chiefs (South Africa) – 28 points
  12. Zamalek (Egypt) – 28 points

Teams in Italics are no longer participating and therefor cannot gain additional points in the current season.
