Mamelodi Sundowns defender Divine Lunga has left an impression on head coach Rulani Mokwena after his first start of the season.
Lunga was unregistered for the first half of the season due to the foreign quota dilemma at Sundowns but has now received his papers to play as a local player.
Having joined the club from Golden Arrows in July 2021, he’s made only 13 appearances for the club due to the fierce competition in defence.
However, there’s optimism that he can now force his way into the squad, and his showing in the 1-1 draw against Orlando Pirates didn’t hurt his chances.
“If there’s some form of silver lining in the dark cloud it can be Divine, I think he was good, it’s difficult to play against a front-three that not only has speed and physicality but very little defensive responsibilities,” Mokwena said about his first start of the season.
“Saleng doesn’t track back etc, I think there were one or two good individual performances and Divine’s performance was one of those, stable, zero mistakes but okay a bit difficult with the build-up but that will come with more understanding. When he understands what to do in certain schemes.”
The 28-year-old Zimbabwe international has racked up 127 appearances in South African top-flight football since arriving from Chicken Inn back in July 2018.
