Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze has given a summary of the club’s campaign after they secured CAF Confederation Cup football and qualified for the MTN8 competition for the first time in three seasons.

Chiefs started the season well, winning four of their first five matches and drawing one. Amakhosi were seen as title contenders and qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup group stages, but they were knocked out of the Carling Knockout Cup in the first round by Stellenbosch FC.

That didn’t damage their form in the CAFCC or the league, as they kept pushing. It was always going to be tough in the continental setup, with two Egyptian teams, Zamalek SC and Al Masry, but they fought until the last day, where they were eliminated from the competition by the head-to-head rule.

Their season then started to take a different direction as they were knocked out of the Nedbank Cup in the first round by the same Stellenbosch. They immediately suffered three consecutive league losses, which dented their title hopes.

The return to the CAF Confederation Cup and qualifying for the top eight is something they achieved this season. They missed the last two MTN8 tournaments after finishing outside the top eight.

Kaze has since praised the people of Durban and the lucky charm of Moses Mabhida Stadium after their 1-0 win over AmaZulu and gave an account of how the season panned out for them.

“It was a good season, it could’ve been better that’s for sure, and we know that we have laid foundation for a better things in the future because we wanted to be high up and compete for the league title until the end,” Kaze told the media.

“But there are lessons that have been learnt that will be put into consideration going forward. I would say that Moses Mabhida Stadium has been very good to us, Durban has been very good to us throughout the season, the CAF Confederation Cup, the league every time we come here the fans they cheering us, they give us that extra energy to extra mile.

“The other is I’m very humbled by the support that we get from the fans and that’s why we do everything we can on the field to make them happy.

“I want to make a plea to them that next Saturday it’s gonna be final home game here in Durban, come out numbers, come support the club of your life and we will give you everything to give your joy back.”
