Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams sent a heartfelt message to Jayden Adams and his family at the memorial held on Thursday.
It’s been almost a week since shocking news of Adams’ death broke the internet. Adams recently returned from the FIFA World Cup with Bafana Bafana, where they made history by advancing to the knockout stages for the very first time.
It was just a month after delivering a masterclass in the second half of the season at Sundowns, where he played a massive role in the side winning their second CAF Champions League trophy after 10 years.
Even though he was only 25 years old, ‘Grootman’ completed football as he won the AFCON bronze medal with Bafana in February 2024.
Williams, who was part of the football players that went to pay respect to Adams, explained the midfielder as a fighter, someone who would do everything in the field of play.
The Bafana skipper also sent a heartfelt message and spoke about the viral CAFCL photo where Adams went head on with an AS FAR player.
“As quiet as he was when it was time to fight, he never backed down,” Williams said.
“During the CAF Champions League final, there’s a wonderful photo on the internet of Jayden standing head-to-head with the opposition player.
“And I asked him after the game, ‘My bro, tell that man he must watch out, he clearly doesn’t understand what he’s saying’.
“He just looked at me, and he burst out laughing. That was the character he was and the mentality he had inside the field. Jayden, your contribution to South African football: thank you for adding the second star for Mamelodi Sundowns, qualifying and participating in the World Cup, and bringing a bronze medal for Bafana Bafana at AFCON. We will miss your quality, your passes, your vision, and your brotherhood.
“Mr Jay, Private Jet, Grootman, we will never forget you; we will carry you in our hearts, carry you on our sleeves, carry you on this badge, and forever you will remain part of us. Jayden, fly high with the angels; we will continue keeping your legacy alive. Rest in peace, my Ma se kind!..”
