Mosimane Shares His Views On AFL

Pitso Mosimane has shared his views about the African Football League, after the tournament made its debut this season, questioning whether teams like Raja CA, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs should not take part.

Mamelodi Sundowns went on to win the inaugural AFL trophy, as they beat Wydad Athletic in the inaugural eight-team tournament.

Mosimane was asked about the AFL by members of the South African Football Journalists Association (SAFJA) in an exclusive interview with the group on Monday, and appeared hesitant to say too much.

The AFL kicked off with just eight teams, but is expected to be expanded in further editions.

Mosimane, while admitting to liking to see the financial input, was concerned by teams who were missing from this year’s edition such as Raja Club Athletic and Soweto giants Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

“I don’t think we should talk about that,” Mosimane told the SAFJA journalists.

“That’s a tournament, that’s not ‘CAF’, if you’re talking about this tournament that Sundowns just won, where you handpick, I don’t know how many teams? Eight? Eight out of 54 countries so that’s a tournament. I don’t know.

“I think for me the only thing that I really like about this tournament is the financials behind it. Empowering clubs, clubs getting more money, but that’s it, that’s about it.

“How do you come to be invited, I don’t know. Is it points-based on CAF? And I just think there are other clubs like Raja Casablanca, I’m just making an example, there are a lot of clubs who have more points.

“I mean [Orlando] Pirates have been there all the time, same as Kaizer Chiefs who have just been in the Champions League final, but I don’t know how Simba has more points?

“But I don’t want to talk about that tournament. I like the tournament because it’s rich, it’s got a lot of money. But I don’t know, you must tell me if it is a threat [to the CAFCL] or not. Financially, yes probably.

“That’s one thing but the other one says it’s just a tournament where everybody picks the teams that he likes or she likes. But Raja is a big team that fills the stadium, I’m just using them as an example, or Zamalek, a big club, unless you don’t know the CAF Champions League. So if you put Simba, what about Yanga?

“That’s another story also. But anyway, I don’t want to go more into that. But good for money, but it’s just a tournament.”
