Njabulo Blom has opened up on the impact of Lionel Messi in Major League Soccer and admits the support he’s received from South Africa has been overwhelming.
The St Louis City SC and Bafana Bafana midfielder has come of age since his move from Kaizer Chiefs to MLS, producing dynamic and consistent displays as he’s become a key figure in Bradley Carnell’s team as their number six.
And while he’s been an excellent addition to the record-breaking expansion team, it’s coincided with the arrival of six-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi joining Inter Miami.
“The hype of Messi, we know he’s one of the best players [in the world], since he moved to the MLS, everyone, most people are starting to take the league seriously, it attracts a lot of sponsors and media attention, so it’s a been great so far,” Blom said before addressing his popularity on social media since his move to the MLS.
“With regards to videos going viral of me on social media made me realise I have a lot of support from back home [in South Africa]. People are watching and I think it’s great to know you have people behind you. I’m grateful for the support I get back home.”
Blom will be aiming to stake his claim for a place in Hugo Broos’ midfield when they take on eSwatini and Ivory Coast ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
