Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has opened up on offers he’s received after finishing third in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and revealed why he was close to resigning from his job.
The Belgian coach dropped a bombshell during a podcast with media in his home country, saying he told SAFA president Dr. Danny Jordaan he wanted to resign.
However, after meeting with Jordaan Broos opted to continue, with certain requests being met by the association as well as the Premier Soccer League.
There were also rumours that the Belgian was chased by other African countries, but he’s ruled out another national team job.
“There was lots of rumours after AFCON, there were a lot of countries who were interested and are maybe still interested,” he said on SABC1.
“But again I told the president that I’ll stay in South Africa and I’ll stay in South Africa. I don’t see me changing again, building again. I have something here, I know what I have here. I love the live here.
“Why should I go on another adventure? I love everything except some things, but it can’t be perfect.”
Broos also opened up on the reasons why he thought about leaving his role after the successful AFCON.
“I said because there were some things that were really a problem for me,” he explained.
“First of all my family, I was always two months, two-and-a-half months here without them and it was heavy in the end. So that had to change and it will change.
“I had a meeting with the president Mr. Jordaan and we talked about it and he understood it. He said ‘ok, there is no problem, if you want to go him and see your family, go take the flight’.
“But there is also the bad relationship with PSL. Also there, if everything goes ok I will meet the chairman of the PSL, Mr. Khoza and I will talk to him.
“I can express my ideas about some things and I hope he understands me.
“And then yeah, you did a good AFCON and at a certain age you’re thinking about the end of your career, it’s normal. It’s not more than that.
“AFCON is done, I had a very good meeting with Mr. Jordaan and the problems are solved. I hope now that I’ll get a little more credit by some people here in this country.”
