Khanye Questions Broos Over Mvala

Junior Khanye has questioned Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos over his continued selection of Mothobi Mvala.

The Mamelodi Sundowns centre-back was part of the Bafana team that defeated Morocco 2-1 in South Africa’s final Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the FNB stadium this past weekend.

Bafana and the Atlas Lions had already qualified for the continental showpiece before the match, but after Saturday’s result Bafana top Group K with seven points from four matches, while Morocco are second with six points from three games.

Saturday’s win against Africa’s highest-ranked team was widely celebrated, but Khanye has insisted Broos should rethink whether Mvala is good enough to start for Bafana at the upcoming AFCON.

“He is still stubborn with Mvala and I don’t even understand why. I mean when the team wins the entire South Africa is happy, not just the coach but all of us as South Africans,” Khanye said on iDiskiTV.

“And if we are on the right track, we will say we are on the right track. We are not fighting with anyone, this is about the nation. So they must fix the Mvala situation. We shouldn’t think that we are sorted at the back just because we won. The thing is when we win it is difficult to point out facts.

“This also goes back to the club that, if quality players like [Rushine] de Reuck and [Mosa] Lebusa are not playing he chooses the guy because he plays regularly including in the Champions League plus he has won the league.

“Obviously because of the hype the coach will call him. So coach Broos and his technical team need to do a proper assessment and we can only improve.

“They might even take him to AFCON because sometimes players are liked for their personalities such as humility. Yes he is a hard-working person but at the back, if we need to start play or anticipate or read situations or need a leader there’s a problem.

“I didn’t even see the combination between him and Siyanda Xulu. If we were tested directly there were going to be problems but well done to Bafana Bafana.”
