Mamelodi Sundowns defender Terrence Mashego hasn’t given up on Bafana Bafana despite not playing regularly at club level.
Mashego has been haunted by injuries since joining Sundowns in September 2022, making just 18 appearances since his arrival.
The former Cape Town City defender is competing with Moroccan defender Abdelmounaim Boutouil and a more-advanced Aubrey Modiba in the left-back and left wing-back position in Rulani Mokwena’s team.
With AFCON less than two months away, Mashego seemingly hasn’t given up on making the final squad that will represent Bafana Bafana but he knows he’ll first need to get regular game-time at club level.
“I’d say, honestly, I’m not in the team because I haven’t been playing much. And to be fair, the team has been doing well – AB [Boutouil] has been consistent Aubrey Modiba has been consistent,” Mashego told the media.
“For me, I just need to be honest with myself, just to observe and be patient with myself and not put much pressure on myself, because I just came back now.
“So I just need to focus and make sure that I’m well prepared. When I get my opportunity. I’m able to execute.”
The former TS Galaxy defender has made five national team appearances, four of them during the qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, when he appeared to be Hugo Broos’ first-choice left-back.
