Bafana Bafana legend Lucas Radebe says they current squad of players are showing signs and confidence that they can win something.
Radebe is widely considered as one of the greatest ever players in South African football history and an icon of Premier League side Leeds United.
He won 70 caps for Bafana, won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations and captained the side to the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cup tournaments, and while the national team endured a slump over the past decade, he feels they’re on the right trajectory under head coach Hugo Broos.
The Belgian coach led South Africa to bronze at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, qualified for the upcoming tournament unbeaten, and are on the brink of securing a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the North America.
“I think I have seen over the past games how consistency has played a role [for Bafana success] not just in playing and winning games but I think in bringing the team together, we’re all familiar of the names being announced, which is great,” Radebe said.
“I think it’s a big step for us and it builds up on the field of play with performances, we compete and it shows as a well, we have not lost in more than 15 games, which is great for us, it shows we have a positive way forward.
“The people at the helm are doing a great job and the players are really committed to the cause for the national team.”
With the team dominated by Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates players, whom are competing in the last-four of the CAF Champions League, Radebe stated it was part of their success too as many of their players were at the traditional powerhouses of Gauteng clubs.
“Before… we always the core of the national team from the [big three] I think with the manager we have and support from the organisation plays an important for the team to do well, not only on the field of play but behind the scenes, organisation,” he said.
“I believe that we’ll get somewhere, there’s great signs with the players, confidence in how they play that they want to win something, we’re heading in the right direction.”
