Banyana Banyana and Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies goalkeeper Andile Dlamini was named Momentum Athlete of the Year at the 18th edition of the Momentum gsports awards, while iDiski Times journalist Lethabo Kganygo also won one of the awards.
The 18th edition of the prestigious awards took place at the Wanderers Club in Johannesburg on Tuesday, and our very own Lethabo Kganyago was named 2023 Mail & Guardian Woman in Print winner for her outstanding coverage of woman’s football.
Meanwhile, Dlamini, who was one of the hosts of the awards, won the Momentum Athlete of the Year award after helping Banyana to secure their first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title and reach the Round of 16 at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
But Dlamini wasn’t the only Banyana star, who got rewarded for the outstanding achievements of the team over the last year, with Desiree Ellis being crowned as Coach of the Year.
Banyana’s long-term sponsor SASOL was awarded the Nielsen Sports South Africa Sponsor of the Year “for its pioneering support of the national women’s football team”.
Another well-known face in South African football – women and men – Mama Joy Chauke was named Supporter of the Year, while the ever-present Jessica Nkomo aka ‘Aunty Diski’ won the Woman in Social Media award for a second year running.
