Young Africans SC coach Miguel Gamondi has revealed he told his Kaizer Chiefs counterpart Nasreddine Nabi that he needs to try and manage expectations of Amakhosi fans and get more quality players.
Yanga hammered Nabi’s Chiefs 4-0 in the inaugural Toyota Cup, with the new Chiefs coach insisting the result shouldn’t be exaggerated because it was just a friendly match.
However, Gamondi insisted that a lot of things need to change at Amakhosi and the club’s management need to bring in quality players, but also expect a season of transition instead of calling for silverware.
“But I did speak with the coach and I encouraged him. There is a lot of work to do,” he said after the game.
“But I also think if you want to compete against a team like [Mamelodi] Sundowns, [Orlando] Pirates or Cape Town City, it is not easy.
“As a coach, you can work inside the pitch during the week but if you don’t have quality it’s going to be difficult.”
Gamondi insisted the 4-0 defeat, and the manner in which his team dominated, should be en eye-opener, not just for Nabi but also the Chiefs’ management.
“What I saw today from Kaizer Chiefs, I repeat it’s an honest critic, for me the result is not the most important but Kaizer Chiefs didn’t create scoring chances,” he continued.
“This is a situation which must concern the coach. We created chances, we created transition, we had ball possession a lot. It’s a lot of work to do.
“But I wish coach Nabi and management they can manage the situation and improve. But in my opinion, you must take it slow, step by step.
“Last season was I think very bad for Kaizer Chiefs. And you cannot change the team and don’t bring any star, big players, it’s difficult, very difficult.
“For that I think it’s most important to manage expectations from the fans. You must be clever how we pass the message, because you must be realistic with the players you have where you can go.
“For me, probably this season is a transition season for Kaizer Chiefs. This is the most logical. Me, I’m realistic, it’s a transition. You cannot be 10 years in no good position and without being players you can’t be champion.
“The wish from the fans I can understand, but management and as a coach, we need to think about football.”
