Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson believes it’s still too early to determine whether Amakhosi are really out of the league title race, despite being 13 points behind Mamelodi Sundowns.

Amakhosi are currently closer to the bottom than the top, having collected a dire 11 points from 10 games, while Sundowns still have a 100% record in the league and collected 24 points from just eight matches.

But the new interim coach believes it’s still too early to rule his side out of the title race, especially due to Sundowns’ packed campaign in the CAF competitions.

“It’s too early to call it off, Sundowns are playing many, many competitions, Pirates are playing many, many competitions, Supersport they playing many competitions. We are playing many competitions,” Johnson told journalists when asked whether Chiefs’ title chase was already over.

“I think it’s early to talk who will win the league. Especially with the big AFL (African Football League) in front of Sundowns.”

Amakhosi last won a league title eight years ago under the leadership of Stuart Baxter, but it appears that have already fallen too far behind in 2023/24, having lost five of their 10 games already.
