Larsen Linked With Royal AM Job

Magesi coach Clinton Larsen is being touted to take over at Royal AM and it is not clear whether club’s president Shauwn Mkhize will sack John Maduka or they will work as co-coaches.

Royal AM suffered their fourth defeat on the trot when they lost to 3-1 SuperSport United in their DStv Premiership match at TUKS Stadium on Thursday night, and Mkhize along with her entourage looked stunned in the stands.

In fact, it is five games without a victory for Maduka’s side, as they last won when they beat Chippa United away in August.

Following the loss to SuperSport, Thwihli Thwahla dropped to 14th on the DStv Premiership table with eight points after nine matches. But Maduka’s job hasn’t been made easier due to the club’s transfer ban over their court tussle with former striker Samir Nurkovic.

Larsen was appointed by Magesi in January this year, just days before the second half of the 2022/23 season resumed.

The former Golden Arrows coach was able to save Magesi from getting relegated last term, finishing 12th in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

This season they are doing much better, lying fourth on the log with four wins in eight matches and 15 points returned. But according to iDiski Times sources Larsen is set to resign and taker over at Royal AM.

There has been an interest to see Larsen to coach in the top flight since he left Polokwane City at the end of the 2019/20 season, who were unfortunately relegated from the top flight then before they bounced back last term.

Larsen, who was in charge of 107 matches with Arrows, made his name with Bloemfontein Celtic, winning the Telkom Knockout in the 2012/13 season against Johan Neeskens’ Mamelodi Sundowns. Maduka at that time was the club’s team manager.

The 52-year-old, who won the first league title with Manning Rangers in the 1996/97 season as a player under Gordon Igesund, is also being remembered for messing Sundowns’ league chase to Chiefs in the 2014/15 season, where Celtic hammered the Tshwane giants 5-0 in Pretoria with Gabadinho Mhango, Keagan Buchanan and Musa Nyatama running the show.
