Gabadinho Mhango has been told to stop training with AmaZulu as the club is working on a deal for him to leave the Durban-based side.
According to iDiski Times sources, Mhango has not been involved much in the team’s training since coach Pablo Franco Martin arrived.
However, at the moment it is not clear whether the move is for him to join a local club or move abroad.
When speculation about Mhango potentially leaving the club rose, Usuthu released a cryptic tweet, saying “okay” with the Malawi international in full gear of Usuthu training.
Mhango’s future has been up for discussion in this transfer window, with Kaizer Chiefs rumoured to have been interested in the former Orlando Pirates striker.
The Malawi international arrived to join Usuthu at the beginning of the last season in a swap deal with Thapelo Xoki, who went in the opposite direction.
“Mhango hasn’t been involved in many training sessions with the club and has been told that the club is working on something because they are talking to a certain club,” said the source.
Mhango’s agent Mike Makaab once said last year there was a huge interest in the striker from MLS, after he shone through in the Africa Cup of Nations finals (AFCON) in Cameroon, scoring three goals in the tournament, including the blinding strike from range against Morocco in the round of 16.
It was the best showing by Malawi at the biennial tournament and Mhango was one of the players who many clubs and scouts kept an eye on, as he was among the front runners then for the AFCON Golden Shoe.
Looking to carry on where he left off to continue with his country at Pirates, it didn’t work out as he fell out of favour under co-coaches Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids.
It is when Pirates explored the move of him joining Usuthu in a swap deal with Xoki.
Last season, as Usuthu struggled and were almost involved in the relegation dogfight where they had three coaches in one season, Mhango scored six goals in 22 matches.
