Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi says Amakhosi remains the biggest club in the country but in a period of illness that will eventually pass.
Chiefs beat Mamelodi Sundowns to reach the final of the Nedbank Cup, but within that period, have not won a game in their last six league outings, heading into the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates on Saturday.
They sit 16 points behind second placed Pirates, who have four games in hand of their fierce rivals, highlighting the stark difference in their league campaign this season and the major inconsistencies of Chiefs.
While the Sundowns victory at Loftus Versfeld came as a surprise to many, with Sundowns running away with the league and in the final of the CAF Champions League, Nabi said a win over the Buccaneers, should be considered a shock result at FNB Stadium.
“If Chiefs win the derby on Saturday it won’t be a surprise, if Pirates win the derby it wouldn’t be a surprise as well,” Nabi said.
“These are the two biggest clubs in South Africa, forget about our current log standing, we believe two big clubs play on Saturday, even though we’re not in a good position, we feel that whoever wins on Saturday it will be because the team deserves it.
“We say that the biggest clubs can get ill, but they never die, we believe that we’re the biggest club in South Africa, but probably at this time we’re a bit ill, but we’re still alive and we can do something [in the derby].”
The two sides meet tomorrow at the Calabash at 15h00.
