Pirates Break Club Record In Riveiro’s 100th Game In Charge

Orlando Pirates have set a new Premier Soccer League with seven consecutive wins to start the 2024/25 season after the 1-0 victory over Richards Bay at Orlando Stadium.

The second round fixture of the current season was brought forward to avoid the postponement of fixtures during the CAF Champions League group stages.

With wins over Chippa United, Polokwane City, the Natal Richboyz home and away, SuperSport United, AmaZulu and TS Galaxy, head coach Jose Riveiro has led the Buccaneers to 21 points from a possible 21, six points ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns.

While Masandawana will be in action against Rise and Shine tomorrow at Loftus Versfeld, they will be looking to avenge their defeat a couple of weeks ago in Polokwane.

But in the match at eSgodini, Pirates looked the better side and secured the victory against a side who were their bogey team last season, losing twice and a draw in three outings.

This was secured by in-forn Evidence Makgopa, profiting from a rebound when Thabiso Monyane’s low effort was fumbled by goalkeeper Ian Otieno just before the half-hour mark.

The home side created plenty of chances with a free-flowing attack of Patrick Maswanganyi, Mohau Nkota and Relebohile Mofokeng supporting the lone striker, Makgopa but for all their lack of cutting edge, it proved a comfortable evening.

Pirates consistency, where perhaps last season wasn’t evident has started to provide the foundation for a genuine title challenge against Sundowns, who are chasing eight consecutive league titles.

It was also a mometus occasion for the club head coach Riveiro who was celebrating his 100th game as the leader of the Soweto giants.
