Swallows Football Club have confirmed that they have changed their name back to the original name of Moroka Swallows.
Moroka Swallows were founded in 1947, as one of the two original Soweto clubs alongside Orlando Pirates.
Until their relegation in 2014/15, they had played in the top flight every single campaign, going down in the PSL Promotional Play-offs.
But things got from bad to worse for the Dube Birds, as they got also relegated from the National First Division in the following campaign, and even from the ABC Motsepe League in 2017.
Prior to the 2018/19 the rebirth of the club in it’s current format started when they bought the NFD status of Maccabi.
They did gain promotion to the DStv Premiership in the 2019/20 campaign after finishing at the top of the National First Division.
However, due to some financial issues from the previous Moroka Swallows reign, they had to restart life in the professional football as “Swallows FC”.
One of those issues included money owed to two Serbian players – Obren Cuckovic and Vladimir Mandic – who played for the old Moroka Swallows back in the the 2014/2015 campaign, and a resulting ban by FIFA were finally put to bed in January.
This allowed for the club to re-register under their original name during the off-season, and they’ve now been able to rebrand to the original name.
