Pitso Books Chiefs Final

Pitso Mosimane and his Al Ahly side will face Kaizer Chiefs in next month’s CAF Champions League final after eliminating Esperance.

The game was rare on highlights in the first 30 minutes but heated up soon after.

Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy was called into action in the 27th minute, when he pushed a long-range shot around the post with a superb save.

Mosimane’s men had a good chance to open the score just a minute later but Esperance’s defence managed to clear the ball in the last second.

The hosts received a penalty in the 36th minute when Taher Mohamed was brought down in the box with the referee initially waving play on. However, after a lengthy VAR check he changed his decision and awarded Al Ahly a penalty while also sending off Esperance’s Ilyes Chetti.

Ali Maaloul converted from the spot to put his 1-0 up on the night and 2-0 on aggregate, with Mosimane’s men carrying the lead into the break.

Al Ahly made it 2-0 in the 56th minute when Mohamed Sherif put the ball passed the Esperance keeper from the edge of the box.

Mosimane’s men had another ball in the back of the net in the 62nd minute when Hussein El Shahat was played in by a long ball and lobbed the ball over the rushing keeper.

The home side then took a foot of the pedal and saw out the game without any real chance from Esperance to find a way back.

Al Ahly will now face Kaizer Chiefs in this year’s CAF Champions League final on 17 July in Morocco.
