SABC Confirm CAFCL Final Will Be Shown Live
SABC have explained why Kaizer Chiefs’ second leg against Wydad Casablanca was not shown live on free TV, while also confirming they will broadcast the CAF Champions League against Al Ahly live.
The crucial home against Wydad had caused some confusion among South African football fans after SABC had initially stated they would broadcast the game on SABC 1.
However, they later announced that it would only be shown on their digital platforms and the new 24-hour SABC sports channel on OpenView.
“I must start by apologizing to our viewers because our messaging was wrong,” SABC Sport general manager Gary Rathbone told SAFM.
“We created the impression that the Chiefs vs Wydad match would be live on SABC 1 when it wasn’t. It was live on our other platforms.
“Initially, we were due to show the game live on SABC 1. That’s because Chiefs had told us they could get CAF to move kick-off to 3pm.
“But they couldn’t do it. SABC 1 and 3 could only give us a slot at 8pm. SABC 2 wasn’t interested. That’s the challenge we face as sport.”
However, Rathbone also insisted that one of SABC’s free-to-air channels will broadcast the upcoming final between Chiefs and Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly live after they already secured the rights.
“We are committed to showing the CAF Champions League final live on SABC 1,” he added.
“We are working very hard on that. We deal directly with CAF for this. We already have the rights for the final.
“We will go all out to make sure it’s live either on SABC 1, 2 or 3.”
The game is set to take place on 17 July in Morocco.
