SuperSport United are through to the group stage of the 2023 CAF Confederation Cup following a 3-0 win over Gaborone United in the second preliminary round second leg match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday evening.
In a game that didn’t produce many chances for both sides in the first half it took 56 minutes for Etiosa Ighodaro to find the back of the net from a Ronald Pfumbidzai assist.
With the tempo of the game changing, the visitors could have found an equaliser through substitute Sheik Sesay in the 69th minute but his shot only hit the side of the net.
Three minutes later Gaborone’s defense was caught napping and the Nigerian completed a brace.
Gaborone captain Mpho Kgaswane tried his luck soon from range but it went over the bar.
In the last 10 minutes Layle Lakay and Grant Maargaman tested Ookeditse Semelamela but he was up to the task, but substitute Bradley Grobler scored SSU’s third in injury-time.
Friday’s result plus the one from the first leg mean Matsatsantsa a Pitori go through on a 4-1 aggregate score-line.
This is the first since the 2017/18 season Gavin Hunt’s charges progress to the group stage. The home side came into the match limping having suffered injuries to key players.
Hunt wasn’t on the bench as he is not eligible to sit in the dugout. Hunt has a UEFA A License but CAF have made it compulsory for coaches to have at least a CAF A License or Pro Licence.
