Kaizer Chiefs DStv Diski Challenge coach Vela Khumalo says no other club has as many DDC players in the first team as the Glamour Boys.
Chiefs have the likes of Happy Mashiane, Samkelo Zwane, Mdudzi Shabalala, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Mfundo Vilakazi and Wandile Duba currently as part of their first team, while Zitha Kwinika and Mduduzi Mdantsane also came through the academy but made their names away from Naturena before coming back.
Ahead of Sunday’s DDC Soweto Derby, Khumalo insisted that developing players is more important for the club than winning the Diski Challenge.
“Honestly in the league [our target] is to be amongst the best, top three always and promote some players,” he told iDiski Times exclusively.
“I think the biggest thing here is to promote players and prepare them for the national team but if the league is there for takings we will take it.
“Their [Pirates’] team is doing so well we cannot run away from that but we have six players into the first team.
“I think we’re the only club at the moment that have that number of players that are playing in the PSL.”
Chiefs currently sit in fourth place in the DDC log, with 41 points, just four behind Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates, and nine behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
Both teams face each other during this week’s DDC festival at Tsakane Stadium, with the Diski Derby kicking off at 15:00 on Sunday.
