Barker Rules Out Stellies From Winning Two PSL Awards

After achieving a very impressive season where they were crowned Carling Knockout Cup champions and qualified for the CAF Interclub competition, Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has showered his players with praise though he expects the club not to win two PSL awards they have been nominated in.

Stellies finished third in the DStv Premiership after suffering a 2-1 defeat against Richards Bay on the last day of the season. Despite failing to collect points, the Cape Winelands side will represent South Africa in the CAF Confederation Cup next season.

They impressively also racked up 12 nominees for this year’s end-of-the-season PSL awards, and had an incredible run of 25 matches unbeaten before losing to Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup semis.

Barker praised his players and mentioned that the nominees are a true reflection of what they’ve done this season, but stated that they’re not expecting to win the “Goalkeeper of the Season” and “Coach of the Season” awards.

He mentioned that Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who had more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper in South Africa, should win the Goalkeeper of the Season award and Rulani Mokwena should win Coach of the Season accolade.

“I’m very proud to have so many nominations, it’s testimony and recognition for what we have done this season,” Barker told the media.

“I was telling Sage [Stephens] that those are the only ones that we don’t need to have many expectations.

“Cleansheets wins the goalkeeper and I think Rulani [Mokwena] deserves to be coach of the season he had a remarkable season to win the league by 20 odd points, to be beaten on the last day of the season is remarkable so he deserves it. I’m sure he will win it.”

Stellies’ most outstanding players like Iqraam Rayners and Devin Titus are expected to provide a challenge in their respective categories.
