Mulenga Keen For SA Stay After AmaZulu Exit

Zambia international forward Augustine Mulenga is keen to remain in South Africa after parting ways with DStv Premiership side AmaZulu.

Mulenga, 32, is a surprise name on the exit list of Usuthu which is said to have a total of 13 players according to club president Sandile Zungu.

Having joined the club in October 2020 from Orlando Pirates, he emerged as one of their leading figures in attack and played a pivotal role in Benni McCarthy’s league runners-up position and qualification for the CAF Champions League.

While he didn’t quite reach the heights of his debut season during the 2021/22 campaign which also saw McCarthy axed by Usuthu, Mulenga as one of their more experienced players still comes as a surprise exit.

It’s believed his exit is down to the attempt of freshening up the squad while getting him off the wage bill would offer new head coach Brandon Truter more room to work within the upcoming off-season with their eight new signings incoming.

iDiskiTimes has learned that the 32-year-old whose contract was set to expire in June 2022 was informed that his contract won’t be renewed before he said his farewell to the rest of the squad, however his representative Nawa Nyambe has confirmed he may remain in the South African top-flight.

“Mulenga has officially left AmaZulu and is now a free agent, yes, there’s been some interest from the Middle East but we’re not ready to commit to that as we’re looking for something more long-term at his age now,” he confirmed to this website.

“He’s open to staying in South Africa because he’s been here for four years now and settled in well into the country, but we are keeping our options open at the moment.”

Mulenga scored eight goals and registered 13 assists in 48 appearances across all competitions since his move from the Buccaneers.
