‘Pep & Klopp Have Proven Why Analysts Are So Important’

Highly rated South African analyst Musi Matlaba has explained why their roles that used to be behind the scenes have become so prominent in recent times.

While analysis is not something new to the modern game, of late, in South Africa, more attention and emphasis is being placed on building a strong technical team with video, performance and opposition analysis now.

It’s gotten to a point where their behind-the-scenes roles of previous times are now announced in the same manner as player signings – which Matlaba feels is down to the impact they have on teams improving their performances.

“Naturally every team is just trying to get 1% better, so analysis has become one of those forefront departments where teams believe they can get the edge,” he told iDiski Times.

“I think guys like Pep and Klopp who left their clubs and took their analysts, people wondered, why would he take this person and maybe not the goalkeeper coach? And it’s because, by extension, an analyst is also part of the coach.

“Whatever ideas he has is for you to bring it into reality, through video and animation and analysis, you are basically his voice as well.”

Matlaba has worked alongside Pitso Mosimane at Sundowns, Al Ahly, Al Ahli, Al Wahda and Abha Club over the past decade.
