Al Ahly President Backs Pitso After Title Miss

Al Ahly’s president Mahmoud El Khatib has come out and backed Pitso Mosimane and his technical team after his side missed out on the Egyptian Premier League title.

The ‘Club of the Century’ failed to defend their league title after dropping points against El Gouna on Tuesday evening, collecting a 3-3 draw after conceding a penalty in the 10th minute of injury time.

However, even if they had won their game Zamalek would’ve been crowned champions after winning their fixture on the night.

There were some reports of Al Ahly fans calling for Mosimane to be sacked after missing out on the league title for a first time in six seasons.

El Khatib, though, has squashed those rumours immediately after the match, saying Mosimane deserves to be honoured for the outstanding work he has done.

“We fully trust coach Pitso Mosimane, captain Sayed Abdelhafiz and our coaching, medical, administrative staffs. You deserve to be honored for what you did in the last period and we are working on that,” Khatib said as per the club’s social media channels.

The president also had a message for his players, who he rallied together on the field after the final whistle to address the team.

“Raise your heads up. We are proud of each and everyone of you,” he said.

“You’ve won the CAF Champions League for two consecutive times. You’ve won the bronze medal of the FIFA Club Word Cup.”

Mosimane and Al Ahly have lifted back-to-back CAF Champions League trophies, the Egyptian Cup, the CAF Super Cup and collected a bronze medal at the FIFA Club World Cup since the South African arrived.

He also finished the league last season but by the time of his arrival the title had already been secured by predecessor Rene Weiler.
