New Bafana Assistant Suffers Cup Final Heartbreak

New Bafana Bafana assistant Cedomir Janevski has lost the Cyprus Cup final with Olympiakos Nicosia in extra-time on Saturday.

The 59-year-old was confirmed as Hugo Broos’ first assistant coach last week and is expected to arrive in South Africa fairly soon.

However, he first had to finish the campaign with his club Olympiakos Nicosia in Cyprus.

Despite ending the First Division in sixth place on 47 points, Janevski had lead his team into only their third Cypriot Cup final and their first in 30 years.

Sadly, though, Janevski charges lost 2-1 in extra-time to Anorthosis.

Nicosia had equalised Anothorsis’ opener in regular time but received a late super punch in the 110th minute when Giorgi Kvilitaia netted the much celebrated winner.

You can watch the highlights of the game below:

Janevski will now leave his role with Nicosia and travel to South Africa in the coming weeks after Broos confirmed he – together with a South African assistant, who is yet to be named – will be in charge of Bafana Bafana’s upcoming June friendlies.

The new Bafana assistant has also coached clubs such as Club Brugge, with whom he won the Belgian Cup in 2006/07, Red Star Belgrade and Ismaily, among others, while he was also in charge of the Macedonian national team between 2012 and 2013.
