Cristiano Ronaldo has equalled an impressive record of Asamoah Gyan after scoring in Portugal’s Euro 2020 opener.
The 36-year-old netted a late brace to hand Portugal a 3-0 win over Hungary after Rafael Guerreiro had scored the opener.
As a consequence, Ronaldo has now found the back of the net in each of the five UEFA European Championships he’s played in after becoming the first player to partake in five Euros.
He scored at the Euros in 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2021, while also finding the back of the net in each FIFA World Cup he has taken part in, namely in 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018.
However, Ghana striker Gyan was, in fact, the first to score in nine different major showpieces, namely the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cups, as well as seven Africa Cups of Nations between 2008 and 2017.
If the FIFA Confederations Cup and and UEFA Nations League are regarded as major tournaments, then Ronaldo has even scored in 11 successive tournaments after netting at the 2017 Confed Cup as well as the 2018 UEFA Nations League finals.
