What SA’s U23 Need To Qualify For Olympics Knockouts
South Africa’s U23 side can still qualify for the knockout stages of the Olympics – here is what they need in the final Group A matches.
David Notoane’s men lost 4-3 to France on Sunday despite leading thrice, while Japan beat Mexico 2-1 in the other Group A fixture.
As a consequence, South sit at the bottom of the log with 0 points from two games and with a goal difference of 3-5.
Hosts Japan lead the table with two wins from two games, while Mexico and France have one victory each.
However, not all is lost yet as South Africa could still qualify if they would beat Mexico by two goals on Wednesday but they would also need to hope that Japan will beat France.
Only then, South Africa could still jump into second place, with SA, France and Mexico ending on three points in this scenario.
South Africa would overtake France on the better goal difference and end on the same goal difference with Mexico but move above them because of the result against each other, which counts as tie breaker.
