Wydad Coach – The Better Team Lost
Wydad Casablanca coach Faouzi Benzarti has insisted his side were the better team in the first leg against Kaizer Chiefs and revealed how they will approach the second leg.
The 73-year-old is one of the most experienced coaches on the continent and has won the CAF Champions League trophy with Esperance in 1994, while reaching another final with Esperance in 2010 and one with Wydad in 2019.
On Saturday, he will attempt to reach his fourth CAFCL final but his side will have to overturn a 1-0 first-leg defeat in order to do so.
Benzarti feels his side dominated the first leg and were unlucky not to get a result and will once again attack their opponents on Saturday.
“We’ve come to South Africa after a league game, after winning the game. Going back to Kaizer Chiefs, we were the better team on the field,” Benzarti told reporters.
“We dominated in all statistics, corners, shots on goal, possession of the ball. Kaizer Chiefs only had realistically three chances.
“We’ve always known that we are a better team playing away from home.
“We are a team that is known for playing forward. In tomorrow’s game we will play forward. We’re going to try and dominate again. We are mentally and physically ready.”
Wydad have reached the CAF Champions League final four times so far and won the competition in 1992 and 2017.
