Saturday – the busiest day at the Bayhill Premier Cup, saw the group stages completed, the round of 16 played and quarter-finalists decided, with a few surprise results, and exciting last eight games set up.
In the final group games at Erica Park in the morning, Cape Town City knocked out Ubuntu Academy, as they won 1-0 to advance from Group B with surprise package SAFA Cape Town (who had beaten both City and Ubuntu). City went on to book their last eight spot, as they beat Rygersdal 3-0 in the last 16, however, SAFA Cape Town’s run came to an end as they lost in a penalty shootout to FC Porto after a 1-1 draw.
While there weren’t too many surprises in the group stages, the knockout rounds started with a few unexpected results which also included Young Bafana Academy beating Stellenbosch 2-1.
While maybe not an upset, it was also the end of the road for defending champions Grassy Park United, as they lost 1-0 to the University of Pretoria
However, two of the favourites flew through as Cape Town Spurs hammered FC Real 6-0, with , while Mamelodi Sundowns were 3-0 victors over Everton FC
