Bafana Announce Starting XI For Uganda
Bafana Bafana have announced the first starting XI of the new coaching regime under Hugo Broos.
The Belgium tactician took over from Molefi Ntseki but will not be on the sideline for his first game in charge because he’s had to travel back to Belgium for his second Covid-19 vaccine jab.
Assistant coaches Cedomir Janevski and Helman Mkhalele were set to be in charge in instead but the former tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday, leaving ‘Midnight Express’ in charge.
In addition to Janevski, Percy Tau and Teboho Mokoena also tested positive for Covid-19, while the latter’s teammate Sipho Mbule will also miss the game because he was in close contact with Mokoena.
Mosa Lebusa, Mothobi Mvala and Rivaldo Coetzee were also ruled out, leaving just 17 players in the squad to face the Cranes.
South Africa, though, have never lost to Uganda before, beating them twice in 2004 and 2005, while the latest contest in 2019 ended in a draw and was won on penalties by Bafana Bafana.
Uganda enter the game on a winless run of six matches, only picking up two draws, which saw them miss out on qualification for the next year’s AFCON.
It will be the third match in charge for Uganda interim coach Abdallah Mubiru after Northern Irishman Jonathan McKinstry was first suspended in March before being sacked in April.
This will be Uganda’s first international following the retirements of a number of senior players, including Mamelodi Sundowns’ goalkeeper Denis Onyango.
Here is how they line up:
Bafana XI: Ronwen Williams, Innocent Maela, Rushine De Reuck, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Sibusiso Mabiliso, Denwin Farmer, Ethan Brooks, Lebohang Maboe, Craig Martin, Sphelele Mkhulise, Bongokuhle Hlongwane
Substitutes: Bruce Bvuma, Njabulo Ngcobo, Aubrey Modiba, Evidence Makgopa, Njabulo Blom, Thabiso Kutumela. Coach: Helman Mkhalele
