Banyana Crash Out In Cosafa Semis

Malawi are into the Cosafa Cup final after beating Banyana Banyana 3-2 in Thursday’s semi-final at the Wolfson Stadium in Gqeberha.

They will meet Tanzania in the final on the weekend, after they beat Zambia in a penalty shootout in the other semi-final.

It was a bit of shaky start for Desiree Ellis’s team, but Malawi weren’t able to take advantage of some early opportunities.

But Banyana went close in the 25th minute, however Melinda Kgadiete was denied by some good last gasp defending after some good work from Sibulele Holweni down the left.

And it was the Malawians who took the lead, as an unmarked Fazila Chembekezo headed in following a set piece in the 38th minute.

Though just before the break, Holweni found the equaliser for Banyana, with a quality strike from the edge of the area, that left goalkeeper Ruth Mhango with no chance. 1-1 at half-time.

The physical battle continued in the second half, as the Malawians gave as good as they got, hoping to reach their first ever Cosafa Cup final.

And Malawi eventually were back in the lead, as Sabinah Thom was on hand to finish off a swift counter attack in the 74th minute.

Banyana were awarded a penalty when Kgadiete was brought down in the box in the 80th minute. Holweni stepped up and made no mistake, 2-2.

But it was Malawi who sealed the victory when Thom added her second, taking advantage of poor defending, as she chipped Swart to make it 3-2.
