Barker – We Seem To Be Crawling To Get Over The Line
Stellenbosch head coach Steve Barker says while happy with his team’s commitment in their goalless draw against TS Galaxy, he had hoped to get the victory that would’ve secured their DStv Premiership status.
Stellenbosch find themselves in a precarious position as they are only two points ahead of Chippa United, who are 15th, in the promotion-relegation playoff spot.
Barker says it was a tough game against Galaxy, but lacked fluidity due to the conditions.
Though he feels his team did have the better chances, but couldn’t take advantage.
Stellenbosch face Golden Arrows in Durban in their final game, on Saturday, and while Barker is happy with his defence, he is hoping his attack will find the solutions to score goals in that game.
“Ja, a very hard fought point, the conditions weren’t too easy this evening, with the field a bit slippery,” Barker told the club’s media department.
“Both teams, a lot to play for, we playing for our lives, to stay in the PSL, TS Galaxy playing for a top eight position. So it was a very cagey affair. And not too much fluidity to the game. We again, showed we were solid, didn’t really allow them too many chances at all.
“And we ourselves probably didn’t create as many chances as we have been of late, but we did create most probably the better chances.
” But ja, it was great commitment, again, from the players, you know, we seem to be crawling to get over the line. We were hoping to get the result that we wanted this evening. But we have to go to the last match of the season and we have to go fight for our survival, but ja, pleased with the effort of the players, perhaps just maybe a little bit too anxious in some situations, not to be calm enough maybe to just make better decisions.
“But ja, it is a young front line that we had on the field today, and that finished, and I’m sure they’ll learn from this experience. Big thing is just tomorrow, regenerate, the mind and the body, travel to Durban and put in another big performance coach.
“Solid at the back all of them really good. I though Deano van Rooyen again was superb this evening, as was the other defenders.
“We’ve kept three clean sheets in a row, it was one of the strategies we had, to be a difficult team to beat in these last matches, which we have shown we are now it’s just finding the solution upfront to get the goal or two that we may need in the last match, but ja, very proud of the defensive effort right through the whole squad. And the back four was really solid.”
