Bayhill In Full Swing At Erica Park

The Bayhill Premier Cup, one of the top under-19 tournaments in South Africa is in full swing at Erica Park, Belhar in Cape Town.

Thursday was day two of the annual tournament, which was held in 2019 before the Covid-19 pandemic brought an abrupt halt to most activities around the country.

Arriving at the venue, it almost felt like a family reunion for this writer, as I bumped into hundreds of faces I hadn’t seen in over two years. It warmed my heart to see familiar faces, and also connect with others I was meeting for the first time.

The Bayhill has always attracted a great crowd, and amongst those attending the tournament which ends on Monday the 18th, were coaches, players, former players, scouts, and agents.

The scouts scribbled in their notebooks, bouncing from game to game, as they tried to identify potential talent, and see what future stars the Bayhill would discover this year. While there are only a handful of youth teams from professional clubs competing in the 2022 edition, there were representatives from most major clubs watching on.

Having kicked off on Wednesday, the first team to reach the knockout stages was confirmed in the early games, when FN Rangers caused a minor upset by beating Cape Town City 1-0. While it was the young City team’s first game, it was Rangers’ second, and that win secured their place in the next stage, having won their first game on Wednesday against Greenwood. City, one of the favourites for the cup, will look to bounce back when they play Pine Stars in their second match on Friday, before wrapping up the group against Greenwood on Saturday.

Other local favourites like Cape Town Spurs, Stellenbosch and Ubuntu Academy kicked off their campaigns with solid wins. Spurs hammered Hustlaz Academy 4-0, Stellies were 3-0 victors over JL Zwane, while Ubuntu beat D&G Orient 4-1.

Meanwhile defending champions Highlands Park began their campaign with a 3-2 win over FC Real.
