Benni Confirms New AmaZulu Captains

Benni McCarthy has named a new captain for AmaZulu for the 2021/22 campaign.

The reigning Coach of the Season has confirmed a change in his permanent captain after Thapelo Xoki has been the club’s first choice for a few campaigns.

McCarthy has now confirmed that Makhehlene Makhaula will be the club’s new permanent captain going forward, while Xoki also dropped out of the vice-captain duties.

The Usuthu coach announced that Veli Mothwa and Mbongeni Gumede will be his vice-captains for 2021/22.

“Makhaula is the official captain of the team this season,” McCarthy confirmed during a chat with the South African Football Journalists Association.

“So Makhaula will be the captain and then he will be assisted by Veli Mothwa, as stand-in captain in case Makhaula is not playing.

“And the third one is Mbongeni Gumede, Shoes, who will be the third standing captain.”

Mothwa also captained Bafana during the recent Cosafa Cup triumph but it remains to be seen who will be Hugo Broos’ new South Africa captain.

AmaZulu started the new season with two defeats and a draw and will continue their campaign against Nyasa Big Bullets in the CAF Champions League on 10 September.
